What is Xvid codec?
Xvid is an open-source research project focusing on video compression and is a collaborative development effort. All code is released under the terms of the GNU GPL license.
The Xvid video codec implements MPEG-4 Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile standards. It permits compressing and decompressing digital video in order to reduce the required bandwidth of video data for transmission over computer networks or efficient storage on CDs or DVDs.
Due to its unrivalled quality Xvid has gained great popularity and is used in many other GPLed applications, like e.g. Transcode, MEncoder, MPlayer, Xine and many more.
To play XviD videos you first need to install the XviD codec on your computer. To install the XviD codec, simply download the latest version of the codec available for your system and follow the installation instructions:

Xvid Codec
The Xvid Codec (formerly capitalized differently: XviD) is a video encoding and decoding (playback) codec designed to compete with the popular DivX codec.
Video file types supported include 3GPP, AVI, MKV, OGM, MP4, MPG, MPEG, VOB, DAT, FLV, PS, TS, NUV. Audio file types supported include AC3, DTS, AAC, APE, FLAC, TTA, WV, OGG, Vorbis, MO3, IT, XM, S3M, MTM, MOD, UMX.
XviD Media Codec
XviD Media Codec includes the open-source MPEG4 codec, which comes from the same open-source project that was the basis for DivX 4.x/5.x. The XviD codec will enable you to watch XviD movies. There’s no XviD Player included, but with this codec installed on your machine, you can view XviD Movies with a media player, such as WMP or WinAmp.
