In the new Ms Office 2007, there is a brand new data saving format for document, spreadsheet and presentation called Open XML file. When you save the Office Word document as usual, you will find the file extension name is .docx not .doc. So if you have no the new Word 2007 on your computer, the old version Word such as: 97, 2000 or 2003 will not open the new .docx file. So how to solve the compatibility problem? Step 1. Launch Ms Word 2007 on your computer, and open the .docx file with it.

Step 2. Press the Office logo button at the top left corner, it will pop up a window, select "Save as" -> "Word 97-2003 Document" as the new saving file format, and set the .doc file output location.
